Well, donning earrings, as a large number of people thought and still think, is not merely restricted to females. If sparkling studs adorned in different colours can turn a plain Jane into a glamour queen then simplistic yet stylish studs or hoops can, very unmistakably, enhance a man’s visual appeal. In old times, men’s earrings were regarded as an art form. This is quite noticeable in the 19th century engraved pictures of men with earrings, in particular of Persian descent, demonstrated on walls of palace. In other regions also, including Egypt and India, spiritual heads, pharoahs and kings respectively were seen flaunting men’s earrings. Earrings for men were also fashionable in Babylonia and Assyria for showing their status in society.

In earlier days, metallic men’s earrings were thought to protect an individual from unholy spirits. Such ancient customs establish why silver and gold hoops were among the most favorite men’s earring style. Ear-lobes were perhaps man’s 1st choice in body piercing. In 1991, most ancient mummified body in the world was found in a Glacier in Austria. As per the the tests conducted, the body was more than 5000 years in age; it had pierced ears with holes that were enlarged to seven to eleven mm diameter.

In the west, the fascination of earrings among womenfolk can be traced back to the 1920s in Western Europe. As for men’s earrings in the west, ear piercing began to get popular towards the mid-20th century. Earlier, ear piercing used to be performed with the help of a safety pin for making holes in the ears. However, in past few decades safer procedures are being employed for example ear guns to set in earrings in ones ears. Furthermore, during the fashionable 1980s, men’s earrings became popular even with the well-known entertainers, athletes, performers and musicians often flashing them. Normally, two types of men’s earrings are available in the market – studs and hoops.

As ear piercing among men acquired popularity, almost all of them were found wearing a single stud in only one ear. In those times, it was considered a taboo for menfolk to wear hoops or studs in both of their ears, or in just right ear. However, now you can find a large number of gentlemen with more holes in their ears than even some women! There are some who think that men’s earrings represent homosexualism. In fact a large number of heterosexual males merely like to sport earrings. Ear piercing is, in fact, a global practise for both men and women; it is exclusively in the west that few looked at it as womanish.

In old times, men jeweled themselves with elaborate earrings even in the western world. E.g., during the Elizabethan period of time many better-known gentlemen including Sir Walter Raliegh, Francis Drake and Shakespeare donned golden earrings. It is argued, ever since the Roman Republic became more feminine with opulence and wealth, earrings became extremely popular among menfolk than females!

Nowadays, it’s not just well-groomed urbanites who are seen donning men’s jewellery, indeed, in the streets, men’s earrings are thought to symbolise strength. Some think men’s earrings play up a man’s sexuality, while retaining masculinity, oftentimes making a man look voguish and a lot snazzier. Be it diamond, gold, platinum, semi-precious stones, or even silver, men’s earrings have become essential parts of mens jewellery.
